MANATEE — Manatee County Sheriff’s Office deputy Aaron Bowen got a ride he didn’t want this weekend.

Bowen responded to an alarm Friday at American Beauty Pools when he saw a man in the rear of the business loading his white Jeep with a concrete saw.

“I saw him remove the saw from the garage,” Bowen wrote in his report.

The man told Bowen he worked there and that the owner told him to move some things. But when Bowen asked him for identification, the man went to his open driver door, sat down in the driver seat and pulled out his keys.

“I grabbed his arm as he was putting the keys in the ignition and told him to stop,” Bowen wrote. “I pulled on his arm and he started the vehicle and began driving off with me still attached to him.”

Bowen reached for the man’s shirt and ripped it and the Jeep began to roll forward, pulling the deputy along with it.

“My right hip hit the door frame and I fell to the ground and rolled a few times,” Bowen wrote.

The unidentified driver fled west on 43rd Avenue West, the report stated.
