Service for fallen officers is Thursday

BRADENTON — A police Memorial Day service will be held Thursday to honor law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty in Manatee County.

The local Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 70, will hold the service at 10:30 a.m. at the Manatee County courthouse. The public is invited to attend.

History Fair winners

MANATEE — Twelve of 24 Manatee County students who competed at the Florida State History Fair at Tallahassee Community College this month won prizes, according to information released Tuesday from the office of Manatee County Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller.

The students competed with 860 students from across the state.

Winners are Mackenzie Yaryura, Nolan Middle School; Mitchell Cobb, Ariana Czaia, Nicolas Fabre, Shelby Carollo, Matthew Boerner, Meredith Gardner and Sarah Tedesco, Bradenton Preparatory Academy; Madison Chapman, Chapman Academy; Nicholas Contessa, Buffalo Creek Middle School; Brett C. Hiskes, Bradenton Christian Middle School; and Jackson Thomas, Haile Middle School.

Ten of the winners will travel to Maryland in June to compete for National History Day, according to the release.

Island relay for life

BRADENTON BEACH — The Anna Maria Island Relay for Life fundraiser for cancer research is set for Friday and Saturday on a track at the south end of Coquina Beach.

This fourth annual AMI Relay for Life kicks off at 3 p.m. with a walk by cancer survivors and caregivers, and teams walking all night will begin at 4 p.m. The event ends at 9 a.m.

This year, the teams have chosen a country, and their participants and activities will reflect that country’s styles and food. Team England, for instance, will have popsicles, water, tea and glow sticks.

Myakka Fire Control Board

MANATEE — The county is accepting applications for Myakka City Fire Control Board of Commissioners.

The positions are for four-year terms expiring June 30, 2013.

Appointees are responsible for policy and financial oversight of the district, which is a dependent district. Applications should be made to the Web site, www.mymanatee.org, and to the county administrator’s page.

Summer food service

MANATEE — The county will provide free, nutritionally balanced lunches at 26 sites for all children 18 and younger.

The Summer Food Service Program will operate from June 8 to Aug. 7, and children may eat whether they are enrolled in summer school or not.

Most of the sites will serve from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The United Methodist Church, 315 15th St. E., will serve from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

11th Ave. E. to close

BRADENTON — One block of 11th Avenue East is scheduled to be closed during the day Thursday and Friday for moving of a modular home, the city of Bradenton said.

The block is from 19th Street Court East to 20th Street East. Barricades will restrict traffic from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
