BRADENTON — The annual meeting of the Manatee County Legislative Delegation is set for 9 a.m. to noon today at the Meals on Wheels Plus, Renaissance on 9th Center, 1816 Ninth St. West.
The delegation will hear presentations on proposed local bills, general presentations and constituent issues. The delegation will not be receiving or hearing any budget requests as directed by the Senate president.

Mire gets academy nods
MANATEE — A former student at Saint Stephen’s Episcopal School has been nominated by U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan for appointment to two military service academies.
Patrick Randall Mire, a student at Hargrave Military School in Chatham, Va., was nominated to the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y., and the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
Members of the House and Senate nominate senior high school students for admission to the U.S. Air Force, Merchant Marine, Military and Naval academies. Applicants who meet qualifications are interviewed and recommended by a non-partisan Service Academy Board appointed by the congressman.
The nominations will be forwarded to the service academies where they will be evaluated based on their academic and extra-curricular record, leadership skills and physical stamina.
Cedar Hammock receives grant
MANATEE — The local Technical Rescue Team No. 644, made up from personnel of three area fire districts, was awarded a Department of Homeland Security grant.
Cedar Hammock Fire Chief Randall Stulce, program manager of the team, said the $16,500 Commercial Equipment Direct Assistance Program grant will be used to purchase a complete compliment of hydraulic rescue tools to enhance the team’s ability to help victims trapped in vehicle or machinery incidents.
The local Technical Rescue Team is one of 53 teams throughout Florida, consisting of personnel from three local agencies, Cedar Hammock Fire Rescue, Longboat Key Fire Department and West Manatee Fire Rescue.
The team consists of a total of 18 state certified firefighters in which 13 are Emergency Medical Technicians and 5 Paramedics.
AMI Bridge work takes a holiday
ANNA MARIA ISLAND — Rehabilitation work on the Anna Maria Island bridge will be suspended for two weeks for the holidays, officials said Thursday.
No work on the bridge, which carries State Road 64 traffic over Sarasota Bay, will be done between Saturday and Jan. 4, said Audrey Clarke, project spokeswoman.
Keep Manatee Beautiful lauded
MANATEE — Keep Manatee Beautiful has received the 2008 Keep America Beautiful President’s Circle Recognition Award. A five-time winner since the President’s Circle Award inception in 2003, Keep Manatee Beautiful was recognized for its performance in litter prevention, waste reduction, beautification and community improvement.
