Sarasota dirt bike rider, 19, in serious condition after being struck by a car while popping a wheelie

SARASOTA -- A 19-year-old dirt bike rider from Sarasota was popping a wheelie when knocked from his 2008 Yamaha 450 by a 2000 Acura Integra driven by a 50-year-old Sarasota woman that pulled in front of him, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The motorcycle rider is in serious condition at Sarasota Memorial. The Accura driver sustained minor injuries, according to FHP

The accident occurred at 6:50 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of 21st Street and Chilk Avenue in Sarasota. The dirt bike was westbound on one wheel on 21st Street approaching the intersection with Chilk Avenue when the Acura turned left directly into its path. The bottom of the dirt bike struck the front right of the Acura.

Darlene Jones Mayes was charged with violation of right of way.

Alcohol was not a factor in the accident, according to FHP.
