SARASOTA -- A 24-year-old woman with a lengthy criminal history was arrested late Sunday after officers heard a gunshot and saw her with gun, according to Sarasota police.
About 9:30 p.m., two officers in the rear parking lot Moore's Grocery, 1993 Dr. Martin Luther Jr. Way, Sarasota, saw a large crowd gathering in the area, according to a news release.
"Officers heard a single gunshot fired and observed Chanee Williams with a firearm. When Williams saw the officers, she ran northbound from the area with the firearm in her hand, refusing orders by officers to stop. Officers observed Williams throw the firearm in an abandoned residential lot at 2727 N. Washington Court, Sarasota," the release states.
Williams, of Sarasota, fell to the ground and was arrested.
Officers found one clear bag of marijuana in her left front sweatshirt pocket. They also found a fully loaded 9mm pistol, police said. Police said Williams' criminal history includes four felony convictions.
Williams was arrested and charged with: possession of a firearm by a convicted felon; firing a weapon in public; resisting arrest; and possession of marijuana. She was being held in Sarasota County jail on bonds totaling $9,000. "Officers notified all area hospitals and searched the area Sunday evening and Monday morning for possible suspicious injury reports. At this time, none have been reported," police said.
