SARASOTA -- A suspect was charged and arrested in connection with the road rage stabbing incident that occurred Thursday afternoon, according to the Sarasota Police Department.
Steven Walters, 50, of Longboat Key, was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and tampering with evidence, both felony charges, following the incident that ended with the suspect producing a knife and slashing at the 41-year-old victim, stabbing and slashing his face several times.
The incident took place near the intersection of Bee Ridge Road and U.S. 41 in Sarasota. According to a news release, officers responded to a road rage incident at 2:20 p.m. that started when both individuals involved were in their vehicles.
Police said the two met in the parking lot of Paradise Plaza in front of Petco, 3800 S. Tamiami Trail #20 in Sarasota, when both individuals left their vehicles and, according to a release, began to fist fight. That's when Walters produced the knife.
According to police, the suspect fled the area and was apprehended near the south side of Paradise Plaza by Sarasota police officers. The victim was taken by helicopter to a local hospital with facial injuries and Walters was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital with injuries sustained in the fight.
