PALMETTO -- A driver is in critical condition after a crash occurred in Palmetto on Sunday afternoon, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The 78 year-old driver of a 2005 Saturn Ion was stopped at a stop sign on 28th Avenue East at the intersection of 61st Street East at 4:30 p.m. Sunday and attempted to cross the intersection, according to troopers.
A 2009 Volkswagen Routan traveling eastbound on 61st Street East when the Saturn moved directly into the 44-year-old driver's path, FHP said. The Volkswagen driver attempted to brake, but the front of his vehicle collided with the left side of the Saturn.
The force of the crash sent both cars into a ditch on the northeast side of the intersection, troopers said. The front of the Volkswagen also struck a nearby guide wire, but the 44-year-old suffered only minor injuries and was not taken to a hospital.
The 78-year-old was listed in critical condition and he's being treated at the Blake Medical Center.
