MANATEE -- County Administrator Ed Hunzeker on Wednesday will announce upcoming changes at Manatee County Animal Services, which has been rocked with criticism from animal welfare advocates and others.
Hunzeker will hold a press conference at 3 p.m. at the county administration building, 1112 Manatee Ave. W., Bradenton, to announce the changes.
Animal Services has been under fire after authorities earlier this year charged the owners of an East Manatee shelter with animal cruelty and fraud. Animal Services had provided animals to Napier's Log Cabin Horse & Animal Sanctuary.
A recently concluded investigation by the Manatee County Sheriff's Office found there was insufficient evidence to charge any Animal Services employees with a crime, but Hunzeker said that would not preclude him from making changes in the department.
Critics have also targeted Animal Services for how it administers efforts to make Manatee a "no kill" county.
