PALMETTO – County officials have re-scheduled the dedication of new Little League baseball fields at Blackstone Park to 6:30 p.m., Monday, June 2.
Also that night will be the inaugural game at the park -- the final game of the Palmetto Little League's spring season, said Nick Azzara, the county's information outreach manager.
Never miss a local story.
The dedication ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m., and the first pitch will be delivered at 7 p.m., he said. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday, May 27, but it was rained out. The game will feature two north Manatee Little League teams playing the first game on three new fields.
In 2012, Manatee County commissioners took on the $3.4 million project and fast-tracked work to minimize the time Little Leaguers had to play without dedicated fields.
The project was designed by Stantec and constructed by Mulligan Contractors, Himes Electric and Professional Service Industries.
During the ceremony, Manatee County Parks and Natural Resources Director Charlie Hunsicker will recognize key contributors to the project, including the city of Palmetto and Pittsburgh Pirates Charities.
Palmetto officials contributed $800,000; Pirates Charities officials gave a $75,000 grant.
The inaugural game will feature Palmetto Little League’s Snead Island Boatworks taking on Aldrich Flooring from Buffalo Creek Little League.
