TALLAHASSEE -- Gov. Rick Scott said Tuesday he will veto a bill that would allow drivers to go 75 miles an hour on much of Florida's interstate highway system.
Scott announced his opposition five days after he attended the funeral of a Florida Highway Patrol trooper who was struck and killed by a motorist while investigating an accident on I-75 in Ocala. At the funeral, another trooper urged Scott to veto the bill, citing public safety concerns.
The bill (SB 392) would have made Florida the first state east of the Mississippi with 75-mile speeds on nearly 1,500 miles of interstates, including I-75, I-95, I-10, I-4, Florida's Turnpike and the Suncoast Parkway.
