SARASOTA -- A 66-year-old Sarasota man was critically injured in a crash that for a while closed northbound Interstate 75 on Tuesday morning, according to Florida Highway Patrol.
About 7:13 a.m., the driver was heading north in his Saturn Ion on the interstate north of Fruitville Road when to avoid a collision with another car, he swerved to the right, lost control, traveled into the east grass shoulder and struck a tree, according to a news release.
The driver was flown to Blake Medical Center in Bradenton, where he was listed in critical condition, according to FHP.
Troopers said they are looking for anyone who witnessed the crash and/or has information about the other car, a Chevrolet Impala, and/or its driver, to call FHP at 941-492-5850 or 239-938-1800.
For about 90 minutes after the crash, some or all of the northbound lanes of the interstate were closed as troopers and emergency personnel responded to the scene, backing up rush hour traffic for miles.
