The crime rate in Manatee County dropped by 3.6 percent last year, state officials announced Wednesday.
In all, there were last year in Manatee County 12,576 instances of the "index crimes" monitored by the FBI: murders, forcible rapes, robberies, aggravated assaults, burglaries, larcenies and motor vehicle. That's down from 12,909 in 2012, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
When the population is taken into account, there were 3,716.7 crimes per 100,000 population, or 3.6 percent less than in 2012.
The numbers of murders, robberies, aggravated assaults, burglaries and larcenies were down; forcible rapes and motor vehicle thefts were up.

Statewide, the crime rate dropped 4.7 percent last year. In Sarasota County, it dropped 9.1 percent.
In Manatee, the crime drop was experienced by residents in most areas of the county -- from 0.7 percent down in the city of Bradenton to 36.1 percent down in Longboat Key. The exception was in the city of Palmetto, where the crime rate increased by 16.8 percent.
In unincorporated Manatee and in the city of Anna Maria, where the Manatee County Sheriff's Office has jurisdiction, the crime rate dropped by 4.5 percent
The drop in the crime rate continues a recent trend in Manatee County. From 2012 to 2013, the crime rate dropped by 15.9 percent according to statistics.
