SARASOTA -- A customer at a CVS store in Sarasota is being crediting with foiling a robbery, according to Sarasota police.
Police say Freddie F. Johnson, 65, of Sarasota on Sunday afternoon walked into the store at 2773 Fruitville Road, implied he had a gun and demanded prescription drugs. He was wearing a bandanna over his face, police said.
"A witness inside the store at the time of the incident saw what was happening and took down Johnson and held him until officers arrived," police said in a news release.
The take-down was captured by a security camera in the store.
Police applauded the witness's actions, but "we do not encourage or recommend that members of the public take matters into their own hands when they observe a crime. We recommend that individuals who observe criminal activity not put themselves into harm’s way or place themselves into a position to become a victim,” said Sarasota police Capt. Patrick Robinson, Bureau of Patrol Operations, Sarasota Police Department.
