Coach Eddie Shannon has received numerous honors during his storied career.
But being voted into the Florida High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame last Tuesday is No. 1 for the beloved 89-years-young icon.
“This is the highest ever,” said Shannon, who was the 2004 Manatee County Distinguished Citizen. “So many young men I had the chance to help, watch them grow and make a decent life.
“This honor is for them letting me coach so many folks, touch their lives and see them go far.”
Shannon coached at Lincoln High and then Manatee for 34 years and remains a revered presence in our community -- especially on the sidelines under those Friday-night lights every fall.
“It’s a good feeling to be able to do that -- helping a whole lot of young people -- and get an honor like this,” he said. “It’s just tremendous.”
Shannon’s induction is April 29 in Gainesville.
n That wily ol’ stork was just spotted on the horizon for Janey Mo and Pepi Ribley, who expect their first bundle of love late summer in Indianapolis.
n Doug Egger is 65?

n It’s good to be Hayden Palino these days. He’s an honor roll fifth-grader at Prine Elementary, a fourth-year altar server at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs and a second-year Webelos in Cub Scout Pack 64 who just completed his “Parvuli Dei” (Children of God) award project from the Diocese of Venice.
n Finally, before accepting a Volunteer Spirit Award at Wednesday’s seventh annual Spirit of Manatee Awards luncheon, the entertainingly loquacious John Vita knew he had to keep his speech short and sweet.
So he left his wife, Tompie, with instructions just in case.
Joked Vita, “I told her, ‘Better have the hook ready.’”
