Sounds like it was a jolly good time for Manatee High School’s Marching Canes and the Sugar Canes in jolly Old England over the holidays.
They were among the American high school bands who marched in London’s annual London New Year’s Day Parade.
“The crowds were incredible and appreciative,” said Sugar Cane director Lori O’Leary. “What was cute were the children yelling, ‘Florida! Disney! Hello, Mickey!’ ”
The Hurricane contingent was 130 strong, including parents.
Besides the parade and New Year’s festivities, they also got to visit Buckingham Palace, Parliament and the Globe Theatre, historically associated with William Shakespeare, as well as his birthplace in Stratford-Upon-Avon.
“Not only did the kids get a chance to perform, but they were exposed to a lot of history, too,” O’Leary said.
