MANATEE — Southeast High School finished as Florida’s top high school at the 31st Annual Technology Student Association Conference from June 28 to July 2 in Denver, with six first-place, three second-place and two third-place awards.
Southeast won first-place awards for robotics, photography, architectural model, construction systems, video and technical sketching, and placed in the Top 10 in 20 of the 25 events the 18-member team entered.
In April, Southeast earned the distinction of becoming Florida’s Most Outstanding TSA High School at the state conference in Orlando.
Haile Middle School won three first place awards in technology transfer, leadership and prepared speech and a second-place award in cyberspace pursuit Web site design.
More than 120 Manatee District students and adult advisors from eight area middle and high schools returned home Friday from the conference.
In the “Formula One In Schools” carbon dioxide-powered (CO2) balsa car competition, Braden River High’s NC Racing Team placed second, and Southeast High’s One Company Racing Team placed third.
The competition requires extensive preparation of two identical, computer numerical controls (CNC)-milled, mini formula one-like cars, a display and oral presentation.
Braden River also won the Denford Manufacturing award for the craftsmanship of their F1 entry. Southeast High School’s F1 car had the fastest time down the track and also the quickest reaction time.
In the CO2 dragster competition, Braden River High won first place.
“This is one of the largest groups our school district has ever sent to nationals which is a reflection of the district’s strong commitment to providing technical education to our students. With increased demand for technical expertise escalating in the United States, the mission of the Technology Student Association’s work in the schools is of great importance to the school district,” Doug Wagner, director of Adult Career & Technical Education, said in a press release.
In Denver, Manatee middle schools were represented by students from Buffalo Creek, Braden River, Haile, and Nolan middle schools; and Braden River, Lakewood Ranch, Manatee and Southeast high schools. Students presented individual and team projects over a five-day period. They competed with other TSA students from across the nation and world in more than 60 categories such as inventions and innovations, film, cyberspace pursuit, robotics, and dragster design.
