Cortez High loses charter school appeal
BRADENTON -- Cortez High School filed an appeal with the Florida Charter Review Appeal Commission after the Manatee County School Board denied its application for a charter school.
The appeal commission earlier this week also denied the application.
Cortez High School now can withdraw its application or go to a hearing before the Florida Department of Education.
LECOM honored for its community service
LAKEWOOD RANCH -- The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine has been named to the president's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for the eighth consecutive year in recognition of its commitment to serving its communities.
LECOM is the only osteopathic medical school nationally to be honored in the education category, which recognizes institutions committed to improving education for children and youth in prekindergarten through undergraduate education. LECOM has a campus branch in Lakewood Ranch.
The honor roll is the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for volunteering, service and learning and civic engagement.
LECOM's Mentoring Club worked with at-risk teenagers at the Manatee County Sheriff's Youth Ranch. During weekly sessions, LECOM students led the teens through a "success skills" program focused on career development and work readiness.
