The suspect in a stabbing at a Publix grocery in Sarasota has been identified as 29-year-old Corey D. Scogin of Sarasota, according to a Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office press release.
According to the release, deputies were called to the Publix Supermarket on Bee Ridge Road at 10:13 a.m. for a report of shoplifting.
A 57-year-old Publix employee attempted to stop the shoplifting suspect, even though no theft occurred or was in progress, when he stabbed the employee in the neck.
According to witnesses, Scogin began to stab himself several times before fleeing the scene southbound on Maceachen Boulevard toward the nearby Beneva Ridge Apartments.
Deputies took the suspect into custody and the K-9 Unit recovered knife used in the incident, according to the report.
Scogin and the employee were transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital in stable condition. According to the sheriff’s office, it does not appear that the two know each other and that the incident was random.
The employee has been released from the hospital but Scogin remains in stable condition and is expected to be released Friday.
Scogin faces one charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. The investigation is ongoing, according to the sheriff’s office.
