SARASOTA -- A 22-year-old Palmetto man faces numerous charges, after he waved a gun inside a Sarasota store and then fired it into the air Monday evening, according to Sarasota police.
About 9:15 p.m., officers were dispatched to Moore's Grocery, 1993 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Sarasota, after reports that someone, later identified as Caleb C. Spraggins, was brandishing a gun at shoppers.
"Shoppers told officers that Spraggins began yelling profanity and telling customers he was going to get in the front of the line," a news release states. "When one of thecustomers asked Spraggins to stop, Spraggins pulled a black semi-automatic pistol from his pocket and pulled the slide back, loading a bullet into the chamber.
"Two of the customers told officers that as Spraggins exited the store, he said would shoot them. The store owner told officers as Spragginswas leaving, he fired a shot into the air while traveling southbound on Washington Court."
A short time later, officers saw Spraggins running into an apartment in 2400 block of Valerie Lane.
During a search of the apartment, officers found a .45-caliber handgun. Records show the gun was reported stolen out of Bradenton, police said.
Spraggins has been charged with: aggravated assault with a deadly weapon; possession of a firearm by a convicted felon; possession of ammunition by a convicted felon; gun theft; resisting; and discharge of a gun in public.
