PALMETTO -- The Palmetto Police Department made an arrest Wednesday in the case of a man who drove his SUV into a Palmetto mobile home in April, which caused the deaths of a young couple and their unborn child.
According to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office website, Christian Crawford was arrested and is in the Manatee County jail, charged with three counts of driving while intoxicated, manslaughter, and one count driving while intoxicated, serious bodily injury.
At about 2:30 a.m. April 1, police reported a vehicle driven by 36-year-old Bradenton driver Crawford crashed into a mobile home where Ivan Carlos, 21, and 9-months-pregnant Brenda Avilez, 18, were asleep.
The man and woman were killed upon impact.
The unborn child did not survive.
Emergency workers responded to the Lone Oak Mobile Home Park, U.S. 41 at Seventh Street West in Palmetto, after a vehicle struck the mobile home.
A Chevrolet SUV going north on U.S. 41 crossed the median into the southbound lanes and crashed through the fence along the east side of Lone Oak.
After the crash, Crawford was taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.
Palmetto police Chief Scott Tyler said a press conference will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at his department.
