MANATEE -- A 73-year-old man driving a Yamaha scooter suffered critical injuries after being struck by a Chevy, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The incident took place at 12:16 p.m. Sunday on Cortez Road West by 30th Street West. According to a report, an 81-year-old Bradenton man driving a Chevy Impala was traveling westbound on Cortez in the left turn lane, preparing to turn left onto 30th Street West. The scooter driver was traveling eastbound on Cortez in the right lane, approaching 30th Street, when the Chevy driver turned left and struck the front of the scooter, FHP troopers said.
The scooter driver was thrown off into the right side of the Chevy, coming to final rest in the southeast corner of the intersection and facing down, according to a report. The scooter came to a final rest facing south on 30th Street West.
The driver of the Impala suffered minor injuries and so did his passenger, a 80-year-old Bradenton woman. The scooter driver was transported to Blake Medical Center with critical injuries.
A charge of violation of right of way was listed in a report, but an FHP officer declined to provide further details early Sunday evening, saying the investigation is ongoing.
