MANATEE -- A Manatee County jail inmate died while in custody Christmas morning.
Amanda Lee Whidden, 34, was found dead in her cell in the Manatee County jail, said sheriff's office spokesman Dave Bristow on Sunday. The official cause of death was not released.
The sheriff's office does not believe foul play was the cause of the death, Bristow said.
"A detective went to the jail and found no trauma. Nothing suspicious," Bristow added.
Whidden had been booked into jail Dec. 23, according to the sheriff's office's jail website.
"We were going around doing bed checks on Christmas morning and the way Ms. Whidden was laying there did not seem right," Bristow said. "When they checked her they discovered she wasn't breathing."
Whidden, who lived in Bradenton, was jailed on a charge of assignation, or prostitution, according to the jail website. She was being held on $500 bond.
Whidden had a lengthy criminal history dating back to at least 2006. She had at least two convictions on her record, most recently in 2012 when she pleaded no contest to drug-related charges.
She was released from prison in April 2013, after serving more than four months of a 13-month sentence, according to the Florida Department of Corrections website.
