MANATEE -- A Palmetto man was killed in a crash in Palmetto at 2:53 p.m. Monday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Donald Stopp, 86, succumbed to his injuries from the crash on U.S. 41 at the intersection with Bayshore Road, according to FHP.
No charges have been filed.
According to FHP, Stopp was eastbound on Bayshore Road at a stop sign, waiting to turn left onto U.S. 41 northbound.
FHP officials reported a 2015 Chevy Cruze driven by a 19-year-old woman from Bradenton was southbound on U.S. 41 in the left lane approaching Bayshore Road when Stopp tried to cross U.S. 41 and moved into the path of the Cruze.
The Cruze front collided with the left side of Stopp's 2004 Ford Taurus, which rotated clockwise upon impact.
The crash blocked the left and center southbound lanes of U.S. 41. Soon, several FHP vehicles were parked along the road median along with the vehicles involved.
Stopp's windshield was smashed and most of its left side was crushed. A white sheet hung on top of the driver's seat and from the top of the left window.
The Cruze was parked nearby with significant front-end damage. The driver sustained burns from the airbag, according to her mother. Amaris Castillo, law enforcement/island reporter, can be reached at 9410745-7051. Follow her on Twitternote>
