PALMETTO -- A 67-year-old man was killed in a car crash in Palmetto on Sunday night, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at the intersection of U.S. 41 and 39th Street East at 7:41 p.m. after Mario Gonzales, 23, pulled out of the driveway access of Anglers Discount Mart and drove in the wrong direction on U.S. 41. Gonzales headed south in the northbound lanes colliding head on with Gary B. Robinson of Largo, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.
Robinson had been heading north on U.S. 41 in his 2006 Chevy Cobalt and was approaching 39th Street east when Gonzales pulled out of the driveway in a 2001 Dodge Caravan carrying two passengers, according to the release.
The left front of both vehicles collided, troopers said. Robinson, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at Manatee Memorial Hospital.
Gonzales was taken to Blake Medical Center with serious injuries. He was later released from the hospital and arrested and booked into the Manatee County jail on charges of DUI manslaughter and driving without a valid driver's license causing death. Both passengers of the second vehicle sustained no injuries.
