SARASOTA -- A home health aide was charged with exploitation of the elderly, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.
Michelle Horton, 42, was arrested on Saturday at 2020 Main St., Sarasota. She is charged with stealing more than $5,000 from an 87-year-old Venice woman with dementia, according to a report. Horton, who was employed by Almost Family Inc. from June 2013 until January 2014, began taking care of the victim and her now-deceased husband last June.
Detectives say that in November 2013, Horton had the victim sign over the title to her 2003 Honda.
"A few months later, Horton had the victim pay nearly $1,200 to Sears for auto repairs on the car and also used the victim's bank account to make a $202 payment on another vehicle Horton owned," a release states.

The victim also wrote eight personal checks to Horton for her services, according to a report, not realizing that she was already paying Almost Family to pay Horton.
Horton is being held in Sarasota County jail on $20,000 bond.
