FHP: Accident on State Road 70 on DeSoto-Manatee county line after large bird crashes into vehicle windshield
ARCADIA -- A large bird hit by a vehicle caused an accident Wednesday morning on State Road 70 east of the Manatee County line, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occured at 7:55 a.m. Wednesday.
According to a report, Reginald Lemont Thomas, 29, of West Palm Beach, was traveling westbound on State Road 70 about 1.5 miles east of County Line Road. Thomas said he hit a large bird which caused his front windshield to break. According to FHP officials, the bird subsequently entered the car, which caused Thomas to swerve and eventually enter the eastbound lanes, approaching another vehicle. According to a report, the other vehicle tried to avoid a head-on collision and steered into the westbound lane. The right front of Thomas' vehicle collided with the right front of the other vehicle. Both vehicles had trailers attached.

Thomas continued on in a southwest direction into a deep ditch filled with water, FHP officials said. He suffered minor injuries. According to a report, the other vehicle came to a final rest at the area of the collision.
The roadway was closed for more than three hours in order to safely remove Thomas' submerged vehicle from the ditch.
Thomas was cited for careless driving.
