VENICE — The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol and other organizations have called off a search triggered by a report of an unattended dive buoy in the Gulf of Mexico around 4 p.m. Monday.
The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office called off the search in the water off Caspersen Beach in Venice.
"At this time we have no missing persons reports and all vehicles in a the adjacent beach parking lots have been accounted for," according to a press release. "At this time we have nothing more than an abandoned dive flag."
Deputies reported no one had seen a diver enter or leave the water since 2:15 p.m. — when the person who reported the buoy arrived at the beach. An unattended beach chair was also found in the area, adding to suspicion there could be a diver in the water, according to the report.

SSO Marine Patrol tugged on the buoy line to contact the diver and received no response.
Two members of the Sheriff’s Underwater Recovery Force were called to find the diver -- if there is one on scene. The Venice Fire Department and the sheriff’s office Aviation Unit assisted in the search.
