MANATEE — Manatee County Sheriff’s Office deputies broke off a high-speed chase over the Green Bridge upon discovering the vehicle they were pursuing was not stolen.
The pursuit began at 4:53 a.m. Saturday at 3500 U.S. 41 when deputies began following a silver Honda they believed to be stolen traveling north on Eighth Avenue crossing the Green Bridge, according to a report.
A pursuit was authorized based on this information. The pursuit continued north to 17th Street then east toward U.S. 41. The vehicle then turned north on U.S. 41.
By this time the tag had been run twice by the sheriff’s office dispatch and did not come back as stolen, according to the report.

The pursuit was terminated as the vehicle continued north on U.S. 41 at speeds topping out at 80 mph. There was no traffic and weather was clear.
Shortly after the pursuit was terminated the vehicle was found abandoned in the 6200 block of U.S. 41. The occupants had fled and were not identified or found.
Attempts to contact the registered owner were not successful and the vehicle was towed. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 866-634-8477.
