SARASOTA — The Sarasota Police Department announced Thursday it will be aggressively targeting drunk drivers through the Labor Day holiday weekend as part of a nationwide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign to remove drunk drivers from the roads.
Each year, more than 10,000 people die on the road from drunk driving, according to a press release. “We want drivers to know that we do not tolerate drunk driving. No warnings, no excuses. If drivers are caught driving under the influence, they will be arrested,” said Lt. Kevin Stiff, assistant commander, Sarasota Police Department Patrol Division.
Last year, over the Labor Day weekend, one person was killed every 34 minutes in an alcohol-impaired driving crash, according to the release. The average DUI costs about $10,000.
