MANATEE — Don Brown has been named Employee of the Month for July by the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Brad Steube said a suspect confessed during an investigation in August 1990 to capital sexual battery. Once the charge was filed by the State Attorney’s Office, however, the suspect fled to Alabama where he was arrested and extradited back to Manatee County.
In February 1993, the suspect was released on bond and fled again. Manatee detectives and the Federal Bureau of Investigations issued a warrant for fleeing prosecution but he was never found.
In 2013, the Manatee Crimes Against Children detectives began an aggressive new search for the suspect. Brown found a link to a man in Alaska living under the name of a deceased man. In June, the man was arrested for identity theft.
Never miss a local story.
“Because of his tenacious work with investigators, a 23-year fugitive is now in custody to face the crimes he has committed,” Steube said in a press release.
