MANATEE — Deputy Carmine Luper of the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office was on vacation in St. Lucia on a sailboat with his father and stepmother when sudden winds pushed the boat onto its side.
As his father tried to slide off the trampoline between the pontoons to exit the boat, his leg got caught in a nylon strap. The boat whipped around and snapped his leg in two and he hit his head and was knocked unconscious and fell into the water.
Luper swam to his father, took the strap from his leg, kept his head above water and brought him back to shore so he could be transported to the hospital.
Luper helped his parents return to Manatee County.
“Deputy Luper’s father believes that he saved his life,” said Sheriff Brad Steube in a press release. “For his abilities to remain calm and take appropriate action in a dangerous situation involving a loved one, Deputy Carmine Luper is awarded Deputy of the Month for July.”
