SARASOTA -- A Sarasota son called 911 at 6:49 p.m. Friday when he saw his father's boat and trailer being towed by a white van toward Interstate 75.
Deputies from the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office made a traffic stop at mile marker 179. The victim identified the 1996 Sailfish 150 being towed on a 2008 aluminum trailer as his own.
Deputies reportedly found bolt cutters and a ball hitch in the van apparently cut from the victim's boat-locking mechanism.
Van driver Nivaldo Echevarria, 25, Miami, was charged with grand theft of a boat and trailer. He reportedly was charged with driving on a suspended drivers license and has four previous driving without a license convictions. He was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. Bond was set at $17,000.
Passenger Ricardo Fuentes, 48, Miami, was charged with grand theft of a boat and trailer. Bond was set at $15,000.
