MANATEE — An 18-year-old Bradenton man escaped injury early Sunday after his truck got stuck on train tracks and was hit by a train, according to Florida Highway Patrol.
No injuries were reported.
Jared Smith was hunting wild hogs with his dogs on the east side of the railroad tracks south of Armstrong Road in Manatee County at 6:10 a.m. Sunday, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.
The dogs crossed the railroad tracks and Smith started to cross with them in his 2002 Ford pickup when the left-front tire stuck on the tracks, the report states.
Smith got out of the truck as a southbound CSX train approached, FHP said.
The train engineer was unable to stop in time to avoid striking the truck, which was sent spinning counter-clockwise off the tracks and onto the east shoulder of the railway, FHP said.
The train came to a controlled stop 165 feet south of the point of impact. It did not derail as it was traveling slowly, according to FHP.
Smith was cited for interference of railroad traffic and stopping and standing on the railway, according to the report.
