MANATEE -- A deputy had to use his stun gun to capture a fleeing suspect Sunday, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.
About 11:20 a.m., Ryan Lopez crashed his car into a traffic light pole at the intersection of Lockwood Ridge Road and State Road 70 and fled in foot. The crash happened after Lopez fled when a deputy tried to make a traffic stop on him since he was wanted on a warrant charging him with violating his probation for a burglary conviction, according to a news release.
Although Lopez was driving at a high rate of speed, deputies had called off a vehicle pursuit when the crash happened, according to the sheriff's office.
After a short foot chase after the crash, Lopez was arrested and taken to a sheriff's office station.
At the station, as he was being taken out of the patrol car Lopez immediately took off running through the parking lot and somehow removed his handcuffs. The deputy fired his stun gun at Lopez and was able to take him back into custody, according to the report.
Deputies escorted Lopez inside the station and handcuffed him to a bench. However, he was able to remove his hands again, the report states.
Lopez, 23, was then escorted to a van and taken to the Manatee County jail.
He faces charges of fleeing to elude, leaving the scene of a crash, resisting arrest, escape and violating probation.
