MANATEE — The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office conducted a countywide DUI saturation patrol from 7:30 p.m. Dec. 31 to 5 a.m. Jan. 1 as part of the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” national DUI crackdown.
Results of the Manatee operation: five DUI arrests; 25 citations, including 14 for speeding, three for red light violations, one summons for no drivers license; and six other violations.Fifteen warning were issued along with five correction cards for faulty equipment. One license was suspended onsite for a person under 21 with a .02 or higher breath alcohol level.
More than 17,000 people are killed and another 305,000 people are injured annually as a result of impaired drivers, according to MCSO.
Studies show the average DUI driver commits this violation 80 times per year. National averages show an alcohol-related fatality occurs every 30 minutes. These incidents cost society more than $54 billion annually in lost productivity, medical expenses, damages and other expenditures, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
