SARASOTA -- Two Sarasota police officers late Sunday shot and killed a man who pointed a gun at them and refused their orders to drop the weapon, according to Sarasota police.
About 10:06 p.m., the two officers were on bicycle patrol in the 1000 block of 42nd Street, near North Water Tower Park, when they encountered the man, according to a news release.
The man pulled out a gun and pointed out the officers. He then refused several commands to drop the weapon, according to police.
"The individual refused and in order to defend themselves, the officers fired their duty weapons," the release sates.

Paramedics attempted to revive the man, but he was declared dead on the scene, police said.
The names of the man and the officers were not released.
The officers have been placed on administrative leave, which police said is routine after an officer-involved shooting.
The case remains under investigation by Sarasota police.
