The number of reported crimes in Manatee County dropped by 0.7 percent in the first six months of this year, compared to same period in 2012 -- a much smaller drop than those reported in Sarasota County and statewide.
As of June 30, there were in Manatee a reported 6,361 "index crimes" -- defined as murders, forcible rapes, robberies, aggravated assaults, burglaries, larcenies and motor vehicle thefts. That's compared to 6,406 crimes reported in January-June 2012.
In Sarasota County, the number of index crimes dropped by 10.3 percent, from 6,265 in the first half of 2012 to 5,621 this year.
Statewide, the number of crimes was down 5.2 percent.

The drop in crime was not uniform across Manatee County.
There were fewer crimes reported in unincorporated Mantee and in the city of Anna Maria (1.2 percent), where the sheriff's office has jurisdiction, as well as in the cities of Bradenton Beach (17.4 percent) and Holmes Beach (7.5 percent). But in the more populated cities of Bradenton and Palmetto, the numbers of crimes were up.
In Bradenton, the number of crimes went from 1,168 in the first half of 2012 to 1,173 this year -- an increase of 0.4 percent.
In the first half of this year, Bradenton saw increases in the numbers of murders, robberies and larcenies; and drops in the other categories. The biggest drop was in burglaries: 259 in the first half of 2012 to 221 in the first half of this year.
In Palmetto, the number of crimes spiked by 36.7 percent -- from 264 in the first half of 2012 to 361 this year.
In Palmetto, the increase was driven by more larcenies being reports: From 134 in the first half of 2012 to 233 in the same period this year. All other crimes, except motor vehicle thefts, were also up -- albeit by much smaller amounts.
Countywide, the numbers of murders, robberies and larcenies were down; and rapes, aggravated assaults, burglaries and motor vehicle thefts were up, according to FDLE.
In Manatee in the first of this year, there were 5 homicides; 107 rapes; 190 robberies; 702 aggravated assaults; 1,358 burglaries; 3,802 larcenies; and 197 motor vehicle thefts.
