MANATEE -- A countywide DUI saturation patrol from 7:30 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday by the Manatee County Sheriff's Office resulted in 14 arrests, including six for DUI and three felonies.
Six people were arrested for misdemeanors.
Of 31 citations, 21 speeding tickets were issued along with 10 other traffic violations.
More than 17,000 people are killed and another 305,000 people injured every year as a result of impaired drivers, according to the MCSO.
Studies show the average DUI driver commits this violation 80 times per year (or once every four or five nights. National averages show an alcohol-related fatality occurs every 30 minutes.
These incidents cost $54 billion annually in lost productivity, medical expenses, damages, and other expenditures. according to the National Highway anmd Traffic Safety Administration.
