MANATEE — A 55-year-old Bradenton Beach man has been charged with fleeing from an officer of the Bradenton Beach Police Department -- in a boat.
George Mark McElroy, who lives in the 200 block of Bridge Street, was approximately 100 feet offshore at 6:24 p.m. Friday in the mooring field of the city of Bradenton Beach when a police officer reportedly saw him laying down with his vessel in reverse with the engine turned all the way in one direction, according to a Bradenton Beach Police Department report.
“His vessel was spinning backwards and he had no hands on the controls of the vessel,” the officer reported.
The officer was within yelling distance of McElroy and reportedly told him four times to dock his vessel at the dinghy dock. McElroy allegedly refused to comply.
A short time later, McElroy drove his vessel to the shoreline, was arrested and charged with operating his vessel in a reckless manner and fleeing to elude a law enforcement officers.
McElroy remained in the Manatee County jail Monday on a $5,500 bond, according to the sheriff’s office website.
