The death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin is the focus of a public service announcement released this week by the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence.
The video, called “Stand Up to ‘Stand Your Ground,’” features a chilling reenactment of the night the 17-year-old was killed in Sanford in 2012. The viewer follows his accused killer George Zimmerman in his pursuit of Martin to the backdrop of real audio from the 911 calls made that evening.
The final seconds of the PSA call on viewers to take action against the law, as other dead teens are shown.
The PSA comes one month after the acquittal of George Zimmerman, the neighborhood crime watch leader who confronted and killed the teen. The organization said, “President Obama has called on Americans to reassess the ‘Stand Your Ground’ laws that have now been enacted in 26 states.”
Never miss a local story.
The coalition has launched a webpage in conjunction with the PSA that features a petition calling for state legislators to take action against “Stand Your Ground” laws.
