BRADENTON -- A 30-year-old woman who worked for the Manatee County clerk's criminal division was found slain Monday in her West Bradenton apartment.
Jazmin Catano was found dead around midnight at the Coral Club apartments.
Manatee sheriff's deputies responded at midnight to suspicious circumstances at the apartment in the 5900 block of 36th Street W. Upon arrival, deputies discovered the woman's body in a bedroom.
The woman's ex-husband called the sheriff's department after he went to the residence to drop off their child. When no one answered the door, he entered the residence and saw evidence of a crime, deputies said. He left and called police.
An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
The victim had just moved into a ground-floor apartment days ago, neighbors said.
David Bristow, Manatee sheriff's spokesman, said even though the investigation is early, deputies are already working on some good leads Monday morning.
At 9 a.m. Monday morning, Christine Clyne of the Manatee County Clerk of the Circuit Court got a call that shocked her.
Clerk employee Jazmin Catano had been killed, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office notified her.
"She was a delightful young lady," Clyne said, choked with emotion.
"Jazmin was a clerk in our criminal division," Clyne said. "She would deal with everything from misdemeanors to felonies. She started in January. Our whole office is in shock."
Catano was one of 270 clerk employees and worked in the Historic Manatee County Court House in downtown Bradenton, Clyne said.
Residents at the Coral Club apartments expressed shock.
"I can't believe this happened," said Lai Wei, a State College of Florida student who has lived in the next building over for two years.
"Nothing has ever happened here like this," Wei said.
Residents said they didn't hear any commotion leading up to the discovery of the body.
"It's very quiet," said and IMG teacher who lives there. "Many IMG students and teachers live here because you can walk to IMG from here. It's got a nice pool."
Other residents said the police are almost never called to Coral Club.
