SARASOTA - Police have arrested two men for stealing used frying oil from several local restaurants, according to the Sarasota Police Department.
Police arrested Leroy L. Shorter, 23, and Dargel Exposito, 28, Thursday after they were seen stealing the used fryer grease from the back of the Wendy's at 1601 S. Tamiami Trail by a manager, according to a news release.
"This "yellow grease" is a valuable commodity in raw form and can be recycled to make bio-fuel," Sarasota Police spokeswoman Linda DeNiro said.
When the manager of the fast food restaurant noticed the men were not wearing the normal uniform and were acting unusual she contacted police.
The two men were then located by a patrol officer on the corner of Fruitville Road and Shade Avenue. The manager was able to identify them in addition to authorities locating four 250-gallon tanks attached to a gasoline powered portable sump pump in the back of their truck.
Shorter is also being charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and tampering with evidence.
Due to Shorter's and Exposito's arrests, Pinellas Park Police Department was also able to clear four similar cases, the news release said.
