MANATEE -- Manatee County sheriff's deputies were looking for two men who tried to rob a tow truck driver and his wife Sunday evening. The assailants fired two gunshots at the victim after he refused to hand over money, but no one was hurt, according to a sheriff's office news release.
About 7:23 p.m., the driver and his wife were responding to a call from a woman who said she needed a car towed from behind a church in the 3400 block of Ninth Street East. When they arrived, they were met by a man who asked if they were there to tow the car and for the driver's cell phone so he could call the woman, according to the report.
When the driver refused, the man left. Moments later, a second man emerged, pointed a gun at the driver and demanded money. The driver refused, even though gunman threatened to kill him, according to the sheriff's office.
The suspect then grabbed the driver's wife, put her in a headlock and threatened to shoot her if the driver didn't hand over money.
The driver told the suspect, "You are not going to shoot her. ... Let her go," the report states.
The suspect then released the woman and a fired a gunshot at the driver, who reported he could hear the bullet whiz past his head.
The gunman then fired a second shot in the victims' direction, and then both suspects fled to the northeast over a fence, according to the sheriff's office.
