MANATEE— A 68-year-old Ellenton man accidently shot himself in the stomach Saturday during the Suncoast Gun Show which was this past weekend at the Manatee Convention Center in Palmetto.
The man had surgery at Bayfront Medical Center and is now in stable condition, Lt. Scott Tyler of the Palmetto Police Department said Tuesday.
The man had taken his own 9mm semi-automatic handgun into the show with the intent of selling it, Tyler said.
As a precaution for others with the same intentions, gun show staff were assembled at a table at the entrance to the show where they removed the magazine and ammo from all weapons and placed a zip-tie device in the trigger housing, Tyler said.
After the man left the show and got back to his vehicle, he reloaded his firearm and was trying to remove the zip-tie when he shot himself, Tyler said.
“He was with some family and I believe they called 911,” Tyler said. “When our officer arrived (the man) was in pain, but was conscious.
“He definitely had fate or good luck on his side,” Tyler said.
