Deputies helped rescue a cow that someone shot with an 18-inch arrow in rural Manatee County.
The arrow struck the black-and-white heifer as she was grazing in the old Woodlands golf course, in the 5900 block of Erie Road. It was sticking out of the cow's left side, just behind the shoulder when authorities arrived. A witness had called around 6 p.m. Monday to report seeing the arrow-struck cow, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.
The cow's owner, Ellis Ballard, asked deputies to try saving the cow. They sedated the cow, removed the arrow, treated the wound and noted that none of the animal's internal organs appeared harmed, according to reports. When officers left the scene, the animal was back on its feet and appeared to be doing well.
The arrow was an 18-inch crossbow bolt with a target tip. Whether the shooting was intentional or accidental was unknown.
