MANATEE -- A 25-year-old man was shot in Palmetto early this morning, but the circumstances of the shooting were not clear.
About 3:25 a.m, two men broke into a room in a rooming house in the 2300 block of Fifth Avenue Drive East, Palmetto. One suspect hit a woman sleeping inside with his gun and said, "Give me your stuff," according to a Manatee County Sheriff's Office news release.
During the break-in, a shot was fired, causing the suspects to panic and flee.
A few minutes later, the sheriff's office responded to a report from a nearby residence that a man had been shot. Deputies found the victim, who "was evasive as to how he was shot," the news release states.
Never miss a local story.
"At this time, it's unknown as to whether (the victim) was involved in the incident at the rooming house."
The sheriff's office said where the break-in happened "used to be the room of a known drug dealer."
The shooting victim was taken to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, and the woman at the rooming house was treated at Manatee Memorial Hospital for a lump on the back of her head.
The suspects were described as wearing all black with their shirts pulled up over their heads.
