MANATEE — A 2-year-old boy was rushed to a hospital Thursday afternoon after the child’s grandmother found him floating in a backyard pool, according to a Manatee County Sheriff’s Office report.
Sheriff’s deputies are investigating the 2:30 p.m. near drowning at a home in the 12000 block of 23rd Street East, in the River Plantation subdivision in Parrish.
Deputies say the child’s 57-year-old grandmother watches the boy, along with his siblings ages 5, 8 and 9, while their parents are at work.
The grandmother told investigators she went to take a shower and left the boy playing downstairs, saying she had only been gone between five and 10 minutes.

When she returned to the living room, she could not find the child until she located him floating in the home’s pool.
The grandmother pulled the boy from the pool and gave him CPR until emergency personnel arrived. The boy was rushed to Manatee Memorial Hospital, where doctors were able to establish a pulse, according to the report.
Doctors have since transferred the child to All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg for further treatment.
The pool had a child safety net that had not been secured because the children had been swimming in the pool prior to the incident, according to the sheriff’s report.
The near-drowning is still under investigation but it is being treated as an accident, according to sheriff’s spokesman Dave Bristow.
“It’s just a horrible, horrible accident,” he said.
