A Pasco County man was arrested Tuesday after deputies found a teenager chained inside the garage of a Land O’ Lakes home, according to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to a residence in Land O’ Lakes on Tuesday to check on a 17-year-old boy who had previous signs of physical abuse. When they got there, deputies said they discovered the teen in the garage, chained at the ankle to a 150-pound punching bag.
Pasco Fire Rescue also responded to the scene, cut the chain and determined the juvenile did not need medical treatment.
The teen’s father, Carlos Alvarez, 42, was arrested around 5:30 p.m. after being located at a nearby park, deputies said.
The teen was able to hit an alarm to alert authorities that he was in the garage, Pasco sheriff Chris Nocco said in a news conference on Wednesday.
The teen, Nocco said, has anger issues and a history of running away. Detectives believe he had been chained up since Sunday morning, when he was returned home after running away.
“No matter how difficult the situation may be, no one deserves to be treated like that,” Nocco said.
According to the arrest report, Alvarez hit the teen with a belt, leaving marks on his body. He also reportedly punched the teen multiple times in the face and body.
Through the investigation, deputies said, it was revealed there had been a history of abuse in the household.
Post Miranda, Alvarez admitted to the crime, the report says.
Alvarez faces a charge of aggravated child abuse and is being held on $100,000 bond.
