Two South Florida men were arrested and charged with stealing a Sarasota business’ property worth more than $50,000 after the owner found the items listed for sale on Craigslist, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.
Sometime between May 6 and 9, an open body trailer and two stump grinders were taken from a fenced lot at Apex Tree and Landscaping, located in the 7800 block of Fruitville Road. The items are worth $53,000, according to the sheriff’s office.
The business owner found the same items for sale on Craigslist and agreed to meet the sellers more than 150 miles away in the Miccosukee Service Plaza off of Alligator Alley, according to the probable cause affidavit. Then he called the police.
Police arrested Alfred Everett Jr. of Naples and Adrian Martinez of Immokalee on May 11.
After being read his Miranda rights, Everett said he was paid $80 by Martinez to drive them both in a borrowed SUV to Sarasota to pick up a machine, and another $40 to meet the Craigslist buyer at Miccosukee Service Plaza. According to the affidavit, the owner of the borrowed SUV said she was also paid.
Both men are being held at the Broward County jail on charges of grand theft of more than $20,000. According to the sheriff’s office, more charges are pending, and the investigation is ongoing.
