A traffic stop of a Sarasota man speeding 23 miles per hour over the limit ended in concealed weapon and drug possession charges.
Tyran Wilkerson, 21, was pulled over in his gold Jeep Cherokee Wednesday morning when he was driving 38 mph in a 15-mph school zone, according to a Sarasota Police report.
When the officer approached Wilkerson’s car, he appeared shaky and nervous. The officer asked him if he had anything illegal in his car, and Wilkerson said, “no.”
Police say Wilkerson said to the officer, “I have to be honest with you, I don’t have my ID with me.”
The officer said he would be back to give him a citation after he went to his patrol car, but, according to the report, the man left his car and ran with an Arizona Fruit Punch can.
After a short chase north along State Road 45 to Goldenrod Street, Wilkerson turned back toward the officer and fell to the ground.
As written in the report, Wilkerson told police that “he had so much going on and that he didn’t need this today.”
While being handcuffed, Wilkerson dropped the punch can, where officers found 9.7 grams of marijuana.
Through a search of his Jeep, officers found six cell phones, a wallet with his college ID and $920 and a second wallet with the registered owner’s ID and $150. Under the floor board of the passenger’s seat, officers found a loaded 9 mm Smith & Wesson gun.
On top of being cited for speeding in a school zone and driving without a valid license, Wilkerson faces charges of marijuana possession near a church, obstruction and carrying a concealed weapon without a permit.
Wilkerson is being held at the Sarasota County jail on a $9,620 bond.
